This family had lived with a kitchen that didn't work for long enough. The layout was frustrating, the style wasn't theirs, and, thanks to poor heating and insulation, it was freezing every winter. They came to us with a clear vision— a more modern, European feel with a big island, a wet bar, a proper drop zone and beautiful, high-quality cabinetry to anchor the whole space. We collaborated with Merri City on design and Paskar Woodworking on custom cabinetry to make their vision a reality.

Highlights from this St. Paul kitchen renovation:

  • The most challenging design aspect was also the most fun: making a modern, European-inspired kitchen fit seamlessly inside a hundred-year-old Tudor. Flat-panel rift sawn white oak got us there—clean and contemporary, but with enough warmth and character to feel right at home in this old house.

  • North Hardwood Floors brought the original birch floors back to life. Refinished and restored, they pair beautifully with the new cabinetry and keep the kitchen connected to the home’s history.

  • New windows, proper insulation and new toe kick radiators fixed the heating problem from the source. The kitchen went from the place everyone avoided all winter to one of the warmest and most-used spaces in the home. (Toe kick radiators are one of our favorite solutions for drafty old kitchens! They tuck invisibly beneath the cabinetry and free up valuable floor space.)

  • A coffee and wet bar was on the wishlist from day one. Tucked into its own dedicated corner with a beautiful backsplash, it keeps the morning coffee routine and the evening cocktail hour out of the main cooking zone.

  • A custom mudroom-style closet off the back door finally gave this family somewhere out of sight to stash the everyday chaos—backpacks, leashes, coats and all.
